Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that he advised Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata against travelling to Ol Kalou. He said he issued the warning before political events held in the constituency on Sunday.
Gachagua stated that he communicated his concerns through Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu before the planned visit. He claimed he chose not to attend the Ol Kalou by-election campaigns because he anticipated possible trouble.
Gachagua Explains Why He Stayed Away
According to Gachagua, he instructed Senator Nyutu to inform Kang’ata about his concerns regarding the visit. He alleged that some individuals had already planned activities that could take advantage of the governor’s presence.
The former deputy president claimed he later repeated the warning publicly after Kang’ata proceeded with the visit. He maintained that his decision to avoid Ol Kalou was based on information he had received beforehand.
Former Deputy President Addresses Linda Mwananchi Claims
Gachagua also dismissed claims suggesting his political camp has differences with the Linda Mwananchi movement. He said he had previously encouraged his supporters to cooperate with leaders linked to the movement.
The former deputy president recalled a political meeting in Thika where he urged supporters to work together. He maintained that there was no conflict between his camp and the movement.
Police Confirm Death During Political Violence
Meanwhile, the National Police Service confirmed that one person died following political violence reported in Kisumu on Sunday. Several other people sustained injuries during separate incidents witnessed in Kisumu and Nyahururu.
Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga condemned the violence, describing it as a threat to public order and national unity. He urged political supporters to respect the constitutional right to peaceful political participation.
Police Arrest Suspects After Kisumu Clashes
According to preliminary investigations, rival groups clashed in Kisumu, leaving one person dead and several others injured. The violence also resulted in nine motorcycles being burned and damage to a police vehicle.
Police officers arrested eight suspects in connection with the incident and launched a search for additional individuals. Investigators continue gathering evidence as authorities pursue those believed to have participated in the clashes.
Separate Incident Reported in Nyahururu
The National Police Service also reported another disturbance during a political rally in Nyahururu on Sunday. Authorities said a group threw stones at rally attendees, causing minor injuries to several people.
Among those injured was Joseph Gitau, who suffered a chest injury before receiving treatment and leaving hospital. Police have continued investigating both incidents while appealing for calm during ongoing political activities.
