Western Kenya has emerged as a key political battleground as President William Ruto and opposition leaders intensify efforts to win support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
On Saturday, Ruto is expected to launch the Shirikiana SACCO at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in Kakamega County.
At the same time, opposition leaders led by Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, George Natembeya and Justin Muturi will address a major rally in Bungoma County.
The simultaneous events highlight the growing competition for Western Kenya’s influential voting bloc.
Ruto Pushes Economic Agenda
The Shirikiana SACCO initiative, championed by Wycliffe Oparanya, aims to expand access to credit and financial services across the region.
According to government officials, the SACCO has attracted thousands of members from Kakamega, Busia, Bungoma, Vihiga and Trans Nzoia counties.
Kenya Kwanza leaders view the project as evidence of the government’s commitment to economic empowerment and grassroots development.
Meanwhile, the opposition coalition continues its Western Kenya tour after launching the campaign in Vihiga County.
The alliance seeks to capitalize on public dissatisfaction over economic challenges and strengthen support across the region.
Former Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi is hosting the Bungoma rally, where opposition leaders are expected to rally support for a united front against Ruto in 2027.
Western Kenya remains one of the country’s largest voting blocs, with millions of registered voters spread across Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Vihiga and Trans Nzoia counties.
The political landscape has shifted significantly in recent years, especially after the alignment of leaders such as Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
As both camps intensify their activities, Western Kenya is likely to remain at the center of Kenya’s political contest heading into the next election cycle.
