David Kiaraho’s Former PA Wins UDA Ticket for Ol Kalou By-Election

Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who previously served as the personal assistant to late Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho, has won the United Democratic Alliance ticket ahead of the July 16 Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

Results released by the party on Friday, May 8, showed that Muchina secured 3,221 votes, narrowly defeating his closest challenger, George Wambugu Kanuri, who garnered 3,077 votes.

The UDA primaries attracted 10 candidates, with a total of 8,258 votes cast through an electronic voting system that relied on tablets instead of traditional paper ballots.

Other candidates in the race included Peter Njoroge Mugo, who received 1,049 votes, Mary Nyokabi Kamau with 406 votes, Peter Chuchu Njuguna with 158 votes, Maina Kiambati with 96 votes, Joseph Ndirangu with 90 votes, Ezekiah Kamweru with 66 votes, Daniel Ndungu with 52 votes, and Stanley Mwangi with 43 votes.

UDA National Elections Board member Jimmy Kahindi presented the nomination certificate to Muchina at Mumbi Primary School following the announcement of the results.

Before the exercise, the party directed aspirants to channel any disputes arising from the nominations to the UDA Electoral and Nomination Dispute Resolution Committee within 24 hours after declaration of the results.

The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat became vacant after the death of three-term MP David Kiaraho on March 29, 2026. The legislator died at the age of 62 while undergoing cancer treatment at The Nairobi Hospital.

UDA is expected to face stiff competition from Democracy for the Citizens Party linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The party is set to conduct its own nominations with several aspirants seeking the ticket.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has scheduled the Ol Kalou by-election for Thursday, July 16, 2026.
