Three Officers Injured as Al-Shabaab Attack SOG Camp in Mandera

Three police officers sustained injuries after suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked a Special Operations Group (SOG) camp in Fino, Mandera County, on Friday night.

Reports indicate that the militants launched an assault on the camp before security officers responded and engaged them in a fierce gun battle.

The attackers reportedly used rocket-propelled grenades and PKM machine guns during the raid.

SOG personnel fought back and exchanged fire with the militants for about 25 minutes. The officers eventually forced the attackers to retreat without overrunning the camp.

Medical teams treated the injured officers as security agencies intensified operations in the area.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects who fled after the failed attack.

Security agencies also deployed additional personnel to strengthen surveillance and support ongoing operations near the Kenya-Somalia border.

The latest incident comes just days after suspected Al-Shabaab militants targeted the Jabi Quick Response Unit camp in Lafey Sub-County.

Police officers thwarted that attack after heavily armed militants opened fire on the facility from a distance. Security personnel prevented the attackers from breaching the camp and recorded no casualties.

Fino and other parts of Mandera County have repeatedly faced security threats because of their proximity to Somalia.

The Special Operations Group serves as an elite counter-terrorism unit under the Border Patrol Unit and works closely with the National Intelligence Service to secure Kenya’s borders and respond to high-risk threats.
