Planes Diverted from JKIA to Mombasa During Emergency Drill

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) carried out a full-scale emergency drill on Thursday, June 11, involving simulated aircraft crash scenarios.
The exercise saw planes initially scheduled to land at JKIA diverted to Moi International Airport in Mombasa to allow for unhindered drill activities.

Kenya Red Cross initially reported a crash-landing and activated response protocols, deploying personnel to coordinate the simulated rescue.
About 20 minutes later, the agency confirmed the incident was part of a planned emergency simulation to test airport readiness.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) said teams were mobilized as part of standard procedure during the drill.
“KAA activated emergency response units to manage the scenario according to our safety protocols,” a statement read.

The simulation involved airport staff, rescue teams, and emergency services to evaluate coordination and response times.
Officials said such exercises are critical to ensure preparedness for real-life aviation emergencies and to protect passengers and staff.

Passengers were informed of flight diversions and briefed on safety protocols to minimize disruption.
Authorities emphasized that no real incident occurred, and all personnel and equipment used were part of the planned exercise.

This drill is the latest in JKIA’s routine safety preparedness program, reinforcing operational readiness for any unforeseen incidents.
Officials encouraged travelers to follow airport guidelines and remain calm during such exercises to ensure smooth operations.
