KNEC Launches Free Online Training for Senior School Teachers

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has opened a free online training programme for senior school teachers. The initiative focuses on Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) and aims to enhance teacher capacity.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, January 13, KNEC said the programme is available through its Educational Assessment Resource Centre (EARC). The training seeks to equip educators with skills required to effectively implement CBA at the senior school level.

“The online training for senior school teachers on Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) is now available for free on the KNEC portal,” the council announced.

The self-paced programme allows teachers to progress at their own speed, ensuring they master all required competencies. KNEC emphasized that structured learning helps participants acquire practical knowledge for classroom application.

How Teachers Can Access the Free Training

Teachers are required to visit the portal via https://cbalms.knec.ac.ke/ and click on “Sign Up.” Participants must complete their profiles, filling in all mandatory fields accurately.

Once registration is complete, users should click “Register” to access the platform. Teachers can then navigate to the “My Courses” section, view the course catalogue, and select the Senior School & Vocational Skills course.

Participants must subscribe to the course and select a learning path before clicking “Introduction” to start. Each course unit must be completed before proceeding to the next, ensuring structured learning.

KNEC encourages teachers to dedicate consistent time for study and to apply the knowledge gained in classroom assessments. This approach supports the nationwide rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) at the senior school level.

Importance of Competency-Based Assessment Training

CBA focuses on assessing learners’ practical and cognitive skills rather than memorization. It aims to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and applied knowledge among students.

The online training equips teachers with assessment tools, methodologies, and techniques that align with CBC principles. Participants gain the ability to design assignments, evaluate skills, and provide constructive feedback.

KNEC highlighted that effective teacher training will improve student learning outcomes and overall educational quality. By strengthening teacher competencies, the council expects better implementation of national educational standards.

Additionally, the programme prepares educators to use digital tools, analytics, and reporting features available on the CBA portal. This capability ensures accurate recording, analysis, and interpretation of learner performance data.

Accessing KPSEA and KILEA Performance Reports

Meanwhile, KNEC has released the 2025 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) performance reports. Schools and candidates can now review individual and institutional results.

Candidates can access KPSEA reports by visiting https://kpsea.knec.ac.ke. They must enter their assessment number and at least one name, accept the privacy notice, and search for the report.

KILEA candidates will receive their performance reports through their respective schools. School administrators can access individual learner results via the CBA portal at https://cba.knec.ac.ke.

These reports allow schools to evaluate performance trends, identify gaps, and plan interventions for students. Educators can also track learners’ progress across subjects and grades.

Benefits of the CBA Portal for Schools

The CBA portal consolidates student performance data under the Competency-Based Curriculum framework. Schools can generate detailed reports for monitoring, planning, and accountability.

Teachers can analyze individual learner performance, highlight weak areas, and design remedial strategies. Schools can also benchmark results against national averages to identify institutional strengths and weaknesses.

The portal provides a centralized platform for all learning institutions, ensuring uniformity and transparency in assessment reporting. KNEC emphasized that data-driven decision-making will improve educational outcomes across the country.

By integrating digital tools into teacher training and assessment, KNEC aims to modernize education management. The portal also supports future planning, curriculum development, and policy evaluation at national and local levels.

KNEC’s Vision for Competency-Based Education

KNEC aims to strengthen the teaching profession through structured training and digital support tools. The council envisions a workforce capable of implementing competency-based learning effectively across all senior schools.

The free training programme removes financial barriers, enabling teachers from all regions to access critical skills. This initiative aligns with national goals of enhancing quality, equity, and relevance in education.

Through the CBA portal, teachers, school administrators, and policymakers can monitor progress, ensure accountability, and deliver meaningful educational interventions. KNEC expects improved learner outcomes, teacher effectiveness, and institutional performance.

By offering both the training programme and performance reporting tools, KNEC demonstrates commitment to modernizing Kenya’s education system. These measures ensure teachers are prepared, students are assessed fairly, and institutions can plan strategically for success.
