Kitui Chache South Member of Parliament Anthony Kibagendi has claimed the United Democratic Alliance faces an uphill battle in the Ol Kalou by-election. He argued that several opinion polls show the opposition candidate enjoying a commanding lead before voters head to the ballot.
The legislator made the remarks during a television interview on Monday, July 13, 2026. He maintained that recent survey findings indicate growing support for the Democracy for the Citizens Party candidate.
Kibagendi Cites Opinion Polls
According to Kibagendi, more than eleven polling firms have conducted surveys across the Ol Kalou constituency. He claimed every poll has placed the DCP candidate ahead of the UDA contender.
The lawmaker said one of the latest surveys sampled voters from all five wards. He alleged that the findings gave the opposition candidate a comfortable lead despite intense political competition.
Kibagendi also accused UDA of engaging in voter bribery during the ongoing campaigns in the constituency. However, he did not provide evidence publicly supporting the allegation during the interview.
MP Questions IEBC Chair’s Remarks
The MP also criticized recent comments made by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission regarding the by-election. He argued that the commission should prioritize protecting the credibility of the electoral process.
Kibagendi said the electoral body should focus on addressing alleged election offences instead of discussing possible postponement. He maintained that firm action against electoral malpractice would strengthen public confidence.
The legislator described the commission’s remarks as disappointing during a period of heightened political activity. He urged election officials to enforce the law fairly against every candidate and political party.
IEBC Warned About Possible Poll Disruption
Last week, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission warned that the Ol Kalou by-election could face postponement under certain circumstances. The commission cited violence, voter bribery, and other electoral offences as possible reasons.
IEBC said the law allows postponement or cancellation if conditions threaten a free and fair election. The warning followed increasing concerns over campaign conduct in the constituency ahead of polling day.
Campaigns Continue Ahead of Poll
Political parties have continued campaigning across Ol Kalou as the by-election approaches. Candidates have intensified efforts to convince voters while election officials monitor compliance with campaign regulations.
