A Kenyan national has been arrested by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers following a tractor-trailer crash in Tennessee.
The arrest was made in Hamblen County after investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The man, identified as Eric Maloba, was reported to have been holding a Texas commercial driver’s licence.
ICE officials said he had been involved in training a commercial driver when the crash occurred.
According to immigration authorities, Maloba had entered the United States legally in October 2018.
However, his authorised stay reportedly expired in April 2019 after which he remained in the country.
ICE Begins Immigration Proceedings
Following the arrest, Maloba was placed in immigration custody as his case moved through legal proceedings.
Authorities said the process would determine his immigration status and whether removal from the United States would be pursued.
ICE described the arrest as part of wider enforcement efforts targeting individuals accused of violating immigration laws.
The agency said the case highlighted its focus on commercial driving licence holders and immigration compliance.
A statement from ICE said Maloba’s case was linked to efforts aimed at strengthening immigration enforcement.
The agency also cited partnerships with local law enforcement agencies under the 287(g) programme.
Kenyan Arrest Comes Amid Wider US Crackdown
The arrest occurred as immigration enforcement activities continued to increase across the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security has recently published names of foreign nationals facing removal proceedings.
A list released by DHS included 125 nationals from five African countries.
Kenyans accounted for 49 individuals on the list, followed by Ghana with 44 nationals.
Other nationalities included Mauritania with 12 people, Morocco with 11 and South Africa with nine.
The individuals listed were reported by authorities to have criminal convictions including offences such as drug trafficking, robbery and assault.
US Immigration Enforcement Expands
The Trump administration has continued expanding immigration enforcement measures since returning to office in January 2025.
The government has made removal of undocumented immigrants a major focus of its domestic policy agenda.
ICE data has shown a rise in immigration arrests as enforcement operations have been intensified.
Authorities have continued targeting individuals they identify as being in the United States without valid immigration status.
Maloba’s case will now proceed through the immigration system as officials determine the next steps.
The outcome will depend on the findings of the relevant immigration proceedings.
