A Kenyan national convicted of murder in California has been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as part of a wider crackdown targeting non-American citizens convicted of serious crimes.
In a statement issued on August 4, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said ICE officers arrested several individuals convicted of offences including murder, sexual crimes and drug trafficking.
DHS Identifies Kenyan National
DHS identified a Kenyan man among those taken into custody during the operation. According to the agency, the man had previously been convicted of murder in Compton, California, before ICE arrested him.
Authorities did not release his name or provide details about his immigration status, sentence history or any pending deportation proceedings.
ICE Continues Enforcement Operations
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said ICE officers were continuing operations targeting undocumented immigrants whom authorities consider threats to public safety.
“Just yesterday, ICE arrested murderers, pedophiles, sexual predators, drug traffickers, and other public safety threats. Every day, the men and women of ICE are arresting and removing illegal aliens from our nation,” Mullin said.
Trump Administration Expands Deportation Efforts
The arrest comes as President Donald Trump’s administration intensifies immigration enforcement and deportation efforts involving individuals without legal status.
DHS said more than three million undocumented immigrants had left the United States within one year through deportations and voluntary departures.
More Kenyans Face ICE Action
Detentions involving Kenyan nationals have become increasingly common in recent months. DHS has reported that more than 40 Kenyans have been arrested by ICE during ongoing enforcement operations.
The latest arrest follows the recent deportation of former NFL player Daniel Adongo to Kenya.
Authorities accused Adongo of overstaying a visa that expired in 2016 and cited a criminal record that included several encounters with law enforcement in Indiana.
The DHS has not indicated when the Kenyan man arrested in California could appear before immigration authorities or whether deportation proceedings have already begun.
