Four Rescued After Boat Capsizes Near LAPSSET in Lamu, Search Ongoing for Missing Passengers

Lamu County – Four people have been rescued and rushed to the hospital after a boat capsized at Kwa Bruno Channel near the LAPSSET area in Lamu County, authorities confirmed on May 21.

The Kenya Red Cross (KRC) stated that search and rescue operations are ongoing, with four more individuals still missing. “Search and rescue efforts are ongoing following a boat capsize incident at Kwa Bruno Channel near the LAPSSET area,” the agency said.

Rescue teams include KRC aqua divers, Beach Management Unit (BMU) officials, and local fishing boats, all working together to locate the missing passengers. The humanitarian agency emphasized that all teams are actively participating in the operation.

Lamu County has experienced a worrying trend in marine accidents in 2026. So far, the region has recorded at least six incidents, contributing to multiple fatalities and missing persons. The Fisheries and Sea Transport Department (FSTD) notes that deep-sea channels in the archipelago have historically averaged 12 to 15 deaths annually.

Earlier this month, a collision occurred at Kilindi Channel, highlighting the recurring safety challenges in the area. The latest incident at Kwa Bruno Channel adds urgency to calls for enhanced maritime safety measures, stricter regulation of vessels, and increased public awareness of marine risks.

Authorities continue to urge locals and travelers to exercise caution while navigating the channels and to comply with safety protocols to prevent further loss of life.

The search mission is expected to continue throughout the day, with teams combing the waters and surrounding areas for the missing passengers.
