Aspirants Using Goons to Be Disqualified: IEBC Says

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has warned political aspirants that it will disqualify anyone linked to the use of goons during campaigns. The move targets rising violence ahead of the 2027 General Election.

IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon issued the warning on April 22. He said the commission will act firmly against politicians who disrupt electoral processes.

Ethekon said some leaders exploit unemployed youth to cause chaos at rallies. He described the trend as dangerous and harmful to democratic processes.

He confirmed that the commission is monitoring political activities closely. He added that any politician found responsible for violence will face disqualification.

The warning follows incidents during the November 2025 by-elections in Mbeere North, Malaba, and Kasipul. These areas recorded cases of violence and disruptions linked to political rivalry.

Recent events have raised further concern over political intolerance. Godfrey Osotsi was attacked in Kisumu by individuals posing as supporters. He suffered injuries and later received treatment in Nairobi.

Opposition leaders have accused government-linked actors of sponsoring such attacks. The claims remain contested as investigations continue.

In another incident, supporters of Rigathi Gachagua faced disruption in Kikuyu. His convoy was blocked before police intervened to restore order.

The IEBC said it will enforce electoral laws strictly to prevent further violence. The commission aims to ensure a peaceful environment during campaigns and voting.

Ethekon urged politicians to engage voters through lawful and respectful means. He emphasized that peaceful campaigns remain essential for credible elections.
