The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested two persons of interest linked to the fatal shooting of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso. The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the investigation.
In a statement released on Thursday, July 30, the DCI confirmed that homicide detectives are questioning the two suspects as investigations continue.
Detectives Recover Key Exhibits
Detectives searched premises connected to the two individuals and recovered several items for forensic analysis.
The DCI said homicide investigators and forensic experts have pursued multiple leads since taking over the case. The team has conducted witness interviews, analysed forensic evidence and carried out targeted operations.
However, investigators have not disclosed the suspects’ identities. They said they withheld the names to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Attack Happened in Upper Hill
Gunmen shot Dr Mutiso on Wednesday in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area in what detectives suspect was a targeted attack.
Preliminary findings show that she had requested an online taxi service before the attack near Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
Witnesses told investigators that armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on the taxi after another vehicle intercepted it.
The attackers inflicted serious gunshot wounds on Dr Mutiso during the ambush. Medical personnel rushed her to Kenyatta National Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead while she received treatment.
Earlier Warning Raises New Questions
After the shooting, police officers and Crime Scene Investigation detectives secured the scene, collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.
The DCI also revealed that Dr Mutiso had earlier reported fears for her safety to police. She had recorded a statement warning that her life was in danger.
Investigators were still examining that complaint when the attackers killed her.
Leading Mental Health Researcher
Dr Mutiso earned widespread respect in Kenya’s mental health sector. She served as Head of Research at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation (AMHRTF).
Her research focused on child and adolescent mental health. She also contributed to research projects and policy discussions that promoted psychological well-being across Kenya and other African countries.
The DCI said detectives continue analysing the recovered exhibits, pursuing additional leads and working to establish the motive behind the killing and the full circumstances surrounding Dr Mutiso’s death.
