Impersonator Pretending to Be New Police Officer Enters Station, Steals Loaded Firearm

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a man suspected of impersonating a police officer. He allegedly stole a loaded firearm from an officer at Kitale Police Station on May 20, 2026.

The suspect, dressed in a police raincoat, claimed to be a newly posted officer from Eldoret. He engaged officers at the gate, asking for assistance to find accommodation within the police lines.

According to the DCI, the man, later identified as 22-year-old Brian Kibet, appeared friendly and gained the officers’ trust. He asked to be directed to a nearby hotel for a meal, accompanied by the officers.

During the walk, Kibet allegedly tricked one officer into carrying his belongings. He then made away with a loaded Steyr rifle containing 25 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The incident shocked the officers on duty and raised security concerns.

Following tips from members of the public, officers from Sibanga Police Station launched an operation in Sokomoko Village, Sitatunga Location. They arrested Kibet and recovered the stolen firearm along with the ammunition during the operation.

The DCI praised the public for providing information that led to the arrest. The agency said cooperation between the public and security services remains essential to fight crime effectively.

The arrest follows another case in Kirinyaga East, where detectives apprehended Newton Wachira Waweru. Officers recovered government stores, including police jackets, jungle trousers, military boots, and a replica firearm.

Brian Kibet remains in custody awaiting arraignment. The DCI said investigations into the case will continue to determine if he had accomplices. They urged the public to report any suspicious behavior to help prevent crime.

The incident highlights growing concerns about individuals impersonating police officers. Authorities stressed the importance of vigilance and public cooperation to protect law enforcement personnel.
