Germany Announces Scholarships For Kenyans With Ksh 106,000 Stipend

Germany has opened applications for the International Parliamentary Scholarships (IPS) programme for Kenyans, offering successful applicants a monthly stipend of 700 euros, equivalent to about Ksh106,000.

The announcement was made by the German Embassy Nairobi on May 6, with qualified applicants encouraged to submit their applications before the May 15, 2026 deadline.

What the IPS Programme Offers

The IPS programme targets politically and socially engaged young people interested in learning how Germany’s parliamentary system operates.

The initiative is organised in partnership with Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin.

Participants spend five months in Berlin gaining direct exposure to parliamentary operations within the German Bundestag. The programme combines practical political exposure with academic learning.

During the programme, scholars will also enrol at Humboldt University for the summer semester, where they can take up to two university courses.

Monthly Stipend and Other Benefits

Successful applicants will receive a monthly allowance of 700 euros, which is approximately Ksh106,000 based on current exchange rates.

The scholarship also caters for accommodation in Berlin and covers travel expenses to and from Germany. Participants will additionally receive accident and liability insurance during the programme.

For many applicants, the financial package makes the scholarship attractive because it significantly reduces living and study costs while abroad.

Who Qualifies for the Scholarship?

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be Kenyan citizens
  • Be below 30 years old at the start of the programme
  • Hold a university degree in any discipline
  • Demonstrate strong social or political engagement
  • Have German language proficiency of at least Level B2

The German language requirement is likely to be the biggest challenge for many applicants. The programme is not designed for beginners, meaning applicants without strong German communication skills may struggle to qualify.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted through the IPS digital portal. Some applicants may also need to send supporting documents in PDF format to the relevant German diplomatic office depending on the instructions provided.

The deadline for applications is May 15, 2026.

Why the Programme Matters

The IPS programme gives young leaders an opportunity to understand governance, democracy and policymaking within one of Europe’s leading economies.

For Kenyan graduates interested in politics, diplomacy, governance or public leadership, the programme offers international exposure, networking opportunities and firsthand experience inside Germany’s parliamentary environment.

Competition for such fully funded opportunities remains high, especially among young professionals seeking global leadership and policy experience.
