Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has removed County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Catherine Mutanu, from office. The decision came just as Mutanu prepared to defend herself against impeachment charges before the County Assembly.
The governor issued the dismissal through a letter dated July 6, 2026. The letter took immediate effect and ended Mutanu’s tenure without further proceedings.
The official communication stated that Mutanu would cease serving as Finance CEC immediately. The governor cited provisions of the County Government Act as the legal basis for the decision.
The letter also named the County Secretary and other senior officials as recipients. It confirmed that the decision applied to the Finance, Economic Planning, and Revenue Management docket.
Assembly Proceedings Disrupted
County Assembly MCAs had scheduled Mutanu to appear before a Select Committee on Monday morning. She was expected to respond to impeachment allegations filed by MCA Peter Kilonzo.
The committee later confirmed receipt of the dismissal letter before the hearing began. The communication halted the planned proceedings immediately.
Mua Ward MCA Francis Mwaniki Ngunga confirmed the removal and said the Assembly received official notice. He stated that the committee could not continue with the impeachment process.
He explained that the matter became irrelevant after the governor’s action. He said the committee could not proceed once the dismissal took effect.
Impeachment Motion Rendered Moot
The Select Committee noted that the dismissal had overtaken the impeachment process. It said the planned hearing could no longer proceed under the circumstances.
MCAs had already started examining the allegations against Mutanu before the decision. The governor’s letter effectively ended the impeachment proceedings.
