A Mercedes-Benz vehicle burst into flames after a serious road accident at the Ole Sereni section of the Nairobi Expressway on Sunday, May 31.
CCTV footage captured the dramatic moments leading to the crash. The video shows the Mercedes-Benz moving in the fast lane before it suddenly veered off course. The vehicle then struck a guardrail and a concrete pillar before catching fire.
The footage also shows a second vehicle traveling behind the Mercedes at a high speed. Moments before the collision, the driver of the second vehicle flashed their headlights, a common signal used to request a slower vehicle ahead to give way.
As the Mercedes attempted to change lanes, the second vehicle struck it from behind. The impact caused the driver to lose control, sending the car into the guardrail and nearby structures. The vehicle burst into flames seconds later.
The second vehicle also appeared to lose control briefly after the collision. However, the driver managed to regain control and continued driving along the expressway.
Authorities have not yet released details about the number of occupants who were inside the Mercedes-Benz at the time of the crash. Officials have also not confirmed whether anyone survived the incident.
The accident caused a traffic snarl-up along the busy highway as motorists slowed down near the scene. Some drivers also stopped in an attempt to offer assistance.
The incident has sparked debate among Kenyans on social media. Some blamed the driver of the second vehicle for speeding, while others argued that the Mercedes driver should have given way earlier when changing lanes.
