Chaos erupted in Nakuru County on Friday after supporters of Governor Susan Kihika and Kuresoi North MP Alfred Mutai clashed during a public event. The confrontation unfolded at Imoja Secondary School, where Kihika had organized a women and youth empowerment programme.
Trouble started shortly after Mutai arrived at the venue. Rival groups exchanged insults before the confrontation escalated into violence.
Supporters from both camps hurled stones at each other as tensions intensified. Moments later, gunshots rang out, forcing many people to flee from the scene.
Preliminary reports indicate that at least three people suffered gunshot wounds. The victims sustained injuries to their arms and legs.
Good Samaritans rushed the injured individuals to Molo Level 4 Hospital. Medical teams treated them, and reports indicate they are recovering.
Vehicles Damaged During Clashes
The violence also left several vehicles damaged. Supporters targeted vehicles belonging to leaders attending the event and smashed windows using stones.
Among the affected vehicles were those linked to Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang. Witnesses reported extensive damage to windscreens and side windows.
A 33-seater bus also caught fire during the confrontation. Despite the unrest, organizers proceeded with the empowerment event.
Several leaders attended the gathering, including UDA National Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, MP David Gikaria, and Nyeri Woman Representative Rahab Mukami.
Local leaders condemned the violence and called for investigations. They warned that growing political intolerance could trigger more confrontations if left unchecked.
Renewed Focus on Criminal Gangs
The incident has revived concerns about the increasing use of gangs during political activities. Security agencies have recently warned about organized groups involved in violence and destruction.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has maintained that authorities will not tolerate criminal gangs. He directed police commanders to take firm action against those involved in such activities.
The Nakuru clashes come days after armed men invaded Chemelil School in Kisumu County. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, about 20 attackers stormed the institution and vandalized property.
Investigators said the gang damaged offices, terrorized staff, and stole mobile phones and cash. The incident added to growing concerns about insecurity and organized criminal groups operating in different parts of the country.
