Three Drown inside Septic Tank in Makindu

Three people, including a father and his son, died after drowning inside a septic tank at Makindu Boys High School in Makueni County. The incident happened on Thursday, May 28.

Reports indicate that the victims had secured a contract to drain sewage from the school’s septic system. The workers allegedly lost consciousness after oxygen levels dropped inside the confined tank.

Emergency teams from the Makueni County disaster unit and the Kenya Red Cross rushed to the scene. Rescue teams later retrieved all three bodies after hours of recovery efforts.

Police Launch Investigations

Police have launched investigations into the tragic incident at the school. Officers want to establish whether the workers had proper safety equipment before entering the septic tank.

Investigators will also determine whether officials followed safety procedures for hazardous confined spaces. Concerns continue rising over poor safety standards in such dangerous jobs.

Authorities moved the bodies to a nearby hospital for preservation as investigations continue. The incident shocked residents and school officials in the area.

Tragedy Comes Hours After Nakuru School Fire

The incident came hours after another deadly tragedy struck Utumishi Girls High School in Nakuru County. A dormitory fire killed 16 students and injured dozens of others.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the school had 815 students enrolled. At the time of the fire, 808 students were present inside the school.

Ogamba revealed that the fire broke out at around 12:45 am before firefighters contained it at about 3 am. Emergency teams responded quickly, although the flames had already caused massive destruction.

The government has since launched investigations into the Nakuru dormitory fire. Officials will also assess whether the school complied with national safety guidelines.
