Motorists using Nairobi’s Northern Bypass faced heavy traffic disruption on Tuesday morning after an accident involving a Super Metro bus. The bus collided with a 14-seater matatu near the Kahawa West underpass.
Witnesses said the crash occurred along the busy stretch heading toward Kahawa West. The impact caused the Super Metro bus to overturn and block part of the road.
Photos from the scene showed massive traffic congestion building up on both sides of the bypass. Hundreds of motorists remained stranded as emergency teams responded to the accident.
Heavy Traffic Hits Northern Bypass
Witnesses urged motorists to avoid the affected route and seek alternative roads. Traffic along the bypass slowed significantly as rescue and clearance operations continued.
One witness said the overturned bus completely blocked part of the underpass section. Vehicles heading toward the city experienced long delays during the morning rush.
Some motorists diverted through neighboring estates to escape the gridlock. Traffic officers later arrived to help manage movement along the affected sections.
Emergency response teams also rushed to the scene shortly after the collision. Officers from the Kahawa West traffic base coordinated rescue operations and crowd control.
Panic Among Passengers After Collision
Witnesses said the collision caused panic among passengers and nearby road users. However, authorities had not confirmed injuries or casualties at the time of publication.
Rescue teams focused on assisting passengers and clearing the damaged vehicles from the road. The overturned bus attracted large crowds as motorists watched the operation unfold.
The cause of the accident remains unclear as investigations continue. Authorities are expected to release further details after completing assessments at the scene.
Rising Road Accidents Raise Concern
The latest crash adds to the growing number of road accidents reported across the country. Several serious accidents have occurred within recent days.
On Monday, four people died after a Nairobi-to-Moyale bus crashed in Nyeri County. Seven other passengers sustained injuries during the accident.
Police said the bus likely suffered a front tyre burst before overturning several times. The accident occurred along the Karatina-Nanyuki Highway in Kieni East.
The rising number of accidents continues raising concern among motorists and transport officials. Authorities have repeatedly urged drivers to observe road safety measures.
