Senator Governor Demand Probe After Student Shot Dead

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah and Governor Paul Otuoma have called for an independent investigation into the fatal shooting of Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Busia Campus student Laura Wesonga. The two leaders urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to establish what happened and hold any officer found responsible accountable.

They issued separate statements through their official social media accounts on Tuesday, June 30. Both leaders condemned the incident and called for justice for the deceased student.

Student Killed During Police Operation

According to the two leaders, Wesonga died on Monday evening, June 29, during a police operation in Marachi Estate, Busia Town. Officers had launched the operation while pursuing a suspected criminal gang known as “Jobless.”

Governor Otuoma described the student’s death as heartbreaking. He said innocent people should never lose their lives during security operations.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Ms. Laura Wesonga, who was fatally shot during a police operation in Marachi Estate, Busia Town, yesterday evening. This loss of life is heartbreaking, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and the entire community,” he said.

Governor Calls for Accountability

Otuoma said police had briefed him that officers confronted members of the suspected gang during the operation. He, however, stressed that Marachi Estate should not face stigma because of the actions of a few criminals.

The governor maintained that security agencies must protect innocent civilians while fighting crime. He said professional policing should always remain a priority.

He asked IPOA to launch a prompt, independent and comprehensive investigation. Otuoma said any officer who acted outside the law should face appropriate action.

Leaders Push for Professional Policing

The governor urged security agencies to strengthen intelligence-led operations that minimise risks to innocent residents. He said authorities can combat crime without exposing members of the public to unnecessary danger.

Omtatah also called for a thorough investigation into the shooting. The senator said establishing the circumstances surrounding Wesonga’s death would help deliver justice and reinforce public confidence in law enforcement.
