The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) has warned that the ongoing cold weather will continue for the next seven days. The agency said the cold spell will last at least until June 22 across several parts of the country.
Forecasters said residents should expect colder mornings and evenings during this period. The authority issued the update on June 15 based on the latest national weather assessment.
Nairobi residents will experience chilly conditions with temperatures dropping to around 13°C. The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Kirinyaga, and Tharaka Nithi, will also face cold mornings with cloudy skies.
These areas will later clear up during the day, allowing brief sunny intervals. However, night temperatures will remain significantly low throughout the week.
Rift Valley Records Some of the Lowest Temperatures
Nyahururu will record the coldest temperatures in the country, with nighttime lows expected to reach 4°C. Other Rift Valley counties such as Narok, Laikipia, Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kericho will experience lows between 8°C and 11°C.
Residents in these regions will continue to feel strong cold conditions during mornings and nights. Daytime sunshine will offer only short relief before temperatures drop again.
North-eastern counties including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa will experience significantly higher temperatures. Mandera will record the highest at about 38°C, making it the hottest area in the forecast.
Coastal towns such as Mombasa, Malindi, and Lamu will remain warm with temperatures ranging between 30°C and 31°C. These regions will continue to enjoy stable warm weather compared to the rest of the country.
Mixed Weather Expected in Other Regions
The Lake Victoria Basin and parts of the Rift Valley may experience afternoon and night showers. Counties including Kisumu, Kisii, Bomet, Nandi, and Kakamega will see alternating sunshine and rainfall.
South-eastern lowlands such as Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, and Kajiado will also experience occasional morning rains and afternoon showers. KMSA urged residents across cold regions to dress warmly and prepare for continued low temperatures.
