Detectives have linked a Beretta pistol recovered during a police operation in Machakos County to Court of Appeal Judge Justice Aggrey Muchelule. Officers recovered the firearm after a suspected robbery suspect died during a shootout with police in Joska.
Investigators say the pistol formed part of evidence collected during the operation. Detectives have since launched further investigations into how the firearm left the judge’s possession.
According to a police report, Justice Muchelule told investigators he only discovered the firearm was missing after police contacted him. Officers informed him that detectives had recovered the pistol during the operation in Athi River South Sub-County.
The judge reportedly said he rarely carried the firearm. He also explained that he last checked it in October 2025 while preparing to renew his firearm licence before forgetting to complete the process.
Detectives Connect Gun to Westlands Robbery
Investigators believe the recovered Beretta pistol was used during the robbery at Chaiiwali Restaurant along General Mathenge Road in Nairobi on July 4. Armed suspects reportedly stormed the restaurant and stole electronic devices from customers.
The robbery attracted widespread attention after surveillance cameras captured the incident. Detectives later intensified investigations to identify the suspects and recover the stolen property.
Suspect Killed During Police Operation
The breakthrough came after DCI officers tracked one of the suspects to a house in Joska. Police identified the suspect as Vincent Ochieng, whom investigators linked to a criminal gang operating in Nairobi, Kiambu and Machakos counties.
According to investigators, the suspect exchanged gunfire with officers after barricading himself inside the house. Police fatally shot him during the confrontation before recovering the pistol, ammunition and several mobile phones.
Investigations Continue
Detectives are now examining how the firearm ended up in the hands of suspected criminals. Ballistic experts will also test the pistol to determine whether it featured in other unresolved criminal investigations.
Meanwhile, detectives have continued searching for other members of the suspected gang. Police say the ongoing operation targets organised criminal groups operating in Nairobi and several other parts of the country.
