Orengo Says No Schools Or Work On 25th June as He Announces Nationwide Protest

Siaya Governor James Orengo has called on Kenyans to participate in commemorations marking the anniversary of last year’s anti-government protests. He urged citizens to stay away from work and schools on June 25, 2026, as they honour those who died during the demonstrations.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, June 18, Orengo said Kenyans should join remembrance activities across the country. He also invited citizens to participate in a march to Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.

Orengo said participants will lay flowers at Parliament in memory of those who lost their lives during the protests. He said the event will provide an opportunity for Kenyans to demand justice for the victims.

The governor announced that similar vigils will take place in all 47 counties. He said the commemorations will remember individuals who died during the demonstrations, including Rex Maasai and Erickson.

Leaders Seek Police Assurance

Orengo and People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua have intensified preparations for the planned events. The leaders issued a notice to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja ahead of the commemorations.

They asked the National Police Service to guarantee protection of lives and property during the planned marches. The leaders maintained that the gatherings will remain peaceful and focus on remembrance.

Nationwide Events Set for June 25

The organisers said the anniversary events aim to honour victims and renew calls for accountability. They rejected claims that the gatherings seek to promote violence or unrest.

The planned activities come one year after youth-led protests that shaped Kenya’s political discussions. Organisers are now calling for peaceful participation as the country remembers those affected.
