The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has officially launched the instant fines traffic management system.
The authority confirmed on Monday, March 9, that motorists committing traffic violations will now receive instant notifications via SMS.
“The Instant Fines Traffic Management System is now live. The system will automatically issue traffic violation notifications via SMS to motorists where applicable,” NTSA stated.
After the cameras detect a traffic offence, the driver must settle the fine within seven days.
If the driver fails to pay on time, the fine will accumulate interest. NTSA will block access to any of its service platforms until the driver clears the balance.
NTSA urged motorists to follow traffic rules and respond immediately to official notifications. Officials promised further updates through government channels.
Smart Camera Network
The system relies on more than 1,000 smart cameras along major roads.
These cameras capture at least 37 traffic violations in real time. Key offences include speeding, lane violations, driving on pavements, and failing to wear seatbelts.
The fines range from Ksh500 to Ksh10,000, depending on the offence’s severity.
The rollout follows instructions from President William Ruto, who demanded the installation of smart traffic cameras in all major towns within one month.
At a National Council on the Administration of Justice meeting at State House, Nairobi, on March 1, the President stressed urgency.
“We have taken forever, the Ministry of Transport. Why don’t we enforce the instant fines programme? Why haven’t we rolled out the cameras on our roads?” he asked.
President Ruto added, “Rolling out cameras is not rocket science. Let us roll out the cameras in five or six major towns within one month. These cameras must integrate with the instant fines framework.”
Implementation Assurance
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir assured the public that authorities would meet the deadline.
He said investors support the project, and the programme will fully link cameras to the instant fines system. The new system will improve traffic management and enhance road safety nationwide.
Motorists should follow traffic rules carefully, as the system will track violations instantly and enforce penalties automatically.
NTSA’s instant fines programme marks a major step toward digitised traffic enforcement and safer roads in Kenya.
