A huge fire has broken out at Kariobangi Light Industries along the busy Kwa Mbao line in Nairobi. Thick smoke covered the area as firefighters and residents struggled to contain the fast-spreading blaze.
The Kariobangi Social Justice Center confirmed the incident through a public alert on Tuesday, May 26. Videos shared online showed massive flames spreading across several structures inside the industrial zone.
Witnesses said the fire started within the densely packed workshops and storage spaces. The area hosts small factories, recycling plants, warehouses, and metal fabrication businesses.
Fire Spreads Rapidly Across Industrial Area
The fire spread quickly because of highly flammable materials inside the area. Plastics, chemicals, scrap metal, and temporary structures intensified the flames.
Emergency teams on the ground appealed for urgent support as resources became overstretched. Residents also joined efforts to stop the fire from spreading into nearby residential areas.
Officials have not yet established the exact cause of the fire. Authorities also continue assessing the full extent of property destruction caused by the incident.
Preliminary reports indicate that several businesses suffered heavy losses. The fire also disrupted activities along parts of the busy industrial corridor.
Kariobangi Light Industries Faces Longstanding Safety Concerns
Kariobangi Light Industries remains one of Nairobi’s busiest informal industrial zones. The area sits near densely populated estates including Kwa Mbao and Kariobangi South.
Thousands of workers depend on the area for daily income and small-scale business activities. The zone supports metal works, furniture production, plastic recycling, and automotive repairs.
Many structures in the area use iron sheets and temporary building materials. Congestion and poor planning have repeatedly exposed the zone to fire risks.
Narrow access roads and weak emergency systems often slow rescue operations during disasters. Illegal electricity connections and inadequate water supply also increase danger levels.
Residents and Firefighters Battle the Blaze
Local residents became the first responders after the fire erupted. Many attempted to control the flames using water, sand, and improvised equipment before emergency teams arrived.
Firefighters later joined the operation as smoke spread across nearby neighborhoods. Police and disaster response teams also moved to help manage the situation.
Authorities warned residents to avoid the affected sections for safety reasons. Emergency teams continue monitoring the fire to prevent further destruction.
The latest incident has once again exposed safety gaps inside Nairobi’s informal industrial zones. Previous fires in similar settlements have caused major economic losses and displacement.
