A murder suspect in Kisumu County has allegedly confessed to orchestrating the killing of a 21-year-old college student, claiming he intended to “punish her.”
The suspect, identified as Steven Colman Okoth, is accused of masterminding the murder of Rose Benta Apondi, a student at Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology.
Investigators say the suspect led detectives to Riat Forest, where the victim’s decomposing body was recovered days after she was reported missing. The discovery followed an intensive search by police and family members.
Reports indicate that Apondi disappeared on April 5 after spending time with individuals known to her. Her family raised alarm after failing to reach her on phone, triggering a missing person investigation.
Police believe the killing may be linked to a strained romantic relationship. The suspect was allegedly a former boyfriend and had reportedly issued threats before her disappearance. Family members say she planned to end the relationship due to repeated violence.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted to recruiting two other men to help carry out the attack. He claimed the act was meant to “punish” the victim, according to investigators.
Preliminary reports indicate the body bore multiple injuries, including stab wounds, suggesting a violent assault. Authorities are now pursuing additional suspects believed to have participated in the crime.
The suspect remains in custody as detectives reconstruct the victim’s final movements. He is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
The case has renewed concerns over gender-based violence, with calls for stronger protection mechanisms for young women in relationships.
