Kenya Power Announces Blackout in Parts of Kakamega

Residents in parts of Kakamega County should prepare for a planned electricity interruption on Wednesday, June 10, after Kenya Power announced maintenance works on its network.

In a notice issued on June 9, the utility company said the outage will affect sections of Khwisero Sub-County between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Areas expected to experience the power interruption include Buchenya, Shikunga, Ikolomani, Khwisero, and Mulwanda. Customers in Khumusalaba, Emalindi, Ekambuli, and nearby locations will also remain without electricity during the maintenance period.

Kenya Power explained that the temporary shutdown will allow technicians to carry out routine work aimed at improving the reliability of electricity supply in the affected region.

The announcement comes as the company continues to record significant growth from Kenya’s expanding electric vehicle market.

Recent figures released by the utility show that revenue from electricity used to charge electric vehicles has increased sharply over the last three years. The company reported cumulative earnings of Ksh382 million from the sector, reflecting rising adoption of electric transport across the country.

Nairobi continues to account for the largest share of electric vehicle charging revenue, although other regions, including Western Kenya, have also shown steady growth.

Kenya Power says electricity consumption by electric vehicles has grown rapidly, moving from relatively low levels in 2023 to more than 1.5 million units consumed in a single month by April 2026.

The company expects the trend to continue as more Kenyans embrace electric mobility and as charging infrastructure expands beyond major urban centres.

For residents in the affected parts of Kakamega, normal electricity supply is expected to resume once the scheduled maintenance works are completed.
