General duty police officers will start wearing new uniforms from Monday, August 31, as the National Police Service prepares to replace the current navy-blue attire.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja announced the change ahead of the official unveiling scheduled for Friday, August 28.
Ruto to Unveil New Police Uniform
President William Ruto will unveil the new uniform during the passing-out parade of more than 6,000 police constables at the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo.
The graduating officers will become the first group to wear the new attire before the National Police Service expands the rollout across the country.
Kanja said the change follows recommendations from a public participation exercise conducted in 2023.
Police Officers Asked for New Attire
According to Kanja, police officers expressed their preferred uniform during the consultation process.
The National Police Service will now return to an earlier approved design as it phases out the deep-blue uniform currently used by general duty officers.
Kanja said the new attire should boost officers’ morale and contribute to better service delivery.
Rollout to Happen Gradually
The new uniforms will not reach every officer at the same time.
The National Police Service plans to distribute them gradually to general duty officers across the country in the coming weeks.
However, the change will not immediately affect every unit within the service.
Officers serving under the Administration Police Service and General Service Unit will continue wearing their current uniforms during the initial rollout.
New Recruits to Lead the Change
The more than 6,000 recruits graduating at Kiganjo will lead the transition to the new attire.
They will leave the training college wearing the new uniforms before other general duty officers receive theirs.
The uniform change marks a major shift in the appearance of Kenya’s general duty police officers after years of using the navy-blue attire.
