Kenya has opened discussions with India on expanding cooperation in oil exploration, drilling, and energy investment. The talks aim to attract expertise and capital to support the country’s efforts to develop its petroleum resources.
Officials from both countries held high-level engagements focusing on practical solutions for advancing Kenya’s upstream oil sector. The discussions targeted areas where Indian companies can support exploration and drilling activities.
The talks involved Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, Petroleum Principal Secretary Kello Harsama, and India’s High Commissioner to Kenya Dr Adarsh Swaika.
The two sides discussed opportunities in exploration technology, drilling services, and investment in petroleum projects. Kenya is seeking international partnerships to accelerate development of its oil reserves, especially in Turkana.
LPG Investment Also Discussed
Apart from oil exploration, Kenya and India explored opportunities in liquefied petroleum gas investment. The discussions focused on improving supply networks and infrastructure to expand access to clean energy.
Officials said stronger LPG systems could support both households and industries. The partnership is expected to contribute to Kenya’s wider energy security plans.
Kenya continues to focus on unlocking oil deposits in the South Lokichar Basin in Turkana County. The region remains the country’s leading petroleum prospect, with significant recoverable reserves identified.
The government has been seeking investors with technical capacity to help commercialise the resources. Officials believe international partnerships will play a major role in moving oil projects from exploration to production.
Kenya Advances Upstream Petroleum Plans
Kenya recently strengthened its drilling capacity after acquiring a Ksh1.9 billion onshore drilling rig from the United Arab Emirates. The equipment is expected to support future drilling activities in Turkana.
However, officials note that actual oil production will depend on commercial viability and technical assessments. The government continues to pursue partnerships aimed at turning petroleum resources into economic opportunities.
