IEBC Orders Voters Registered Before 2012 to Re-Register Ahead of 2027 Elections, Reason Revealed

IEBC has directed voters by asking those listed before 2012 to register afresh ahead of elections. Chairman Erastus Edung Ethekon clarified that the current register covers post-2012 names and old voters with biometrics.

The electoral agency explained that many pre-2012 entries lack complete biometric records, making them absent from the digital system. Citizens who fail to re-register risk exclusion from the voters’ roll in the upcoming general election.

Ethekon urged all eligible Kenyans to visit IEBC registration centres or Huduma Centres promptly to update their details. The chairman emphasized that a comprehensive register is crucial for ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process.

Officials said the enhanced registration system now relies on biometric verification to prevent duplication and fraud during voting. They added that modern technology allows real-time monitoring and quick validation of all registered voters nationwide.

Public reaction has been intense, with many Kenyans expressing concern about possible disenfranchisement if they miss the re-registration window. Others welcomed the move, noting that cleaning up the voters’ roll strengthens democracy and electoral fairness.

IEBC launched campaigns across counties to encourage citizens to confirm or update their voter details before the election year. Authorities set targets in the millions, aiming to capture all eligible voters for a credible and inclusive election.

The agency clarified that re-registration is free and open to every Kenyan who meets the age and citizenship requirements. They warned against relying on old registration records, as incomplete data could result in automatic removal from the voters’ roll.

Ethekon concluded that timely action by citizens will ensure no eligible voter loses their right to participate in the 2027 general election. He reiterated that IEBC will continue outreach programs to provide guidance and support during the registration process.
