Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticised Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director Mohamed Amin over the killing of Mount Elgon parliamentary hopeful Nathan Wasama.
Speaking during a political tour of Narok East Constituency on Monday, August 10, Gachagua questioned why police allegedly failed to act despite claims that Wasama had repeatedly reported threats to his life.
Gachagua Demands Answers
Gachagua claimed that Wasama had reported the alleged threats to police five times before gunmen shot him dead.
He demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing and questioned why detectives had not announced any arrests several days after the shooting.
The DCP leader also accused the DCI of failing to properly investigate cases involving government critics and suggested that some investigations were being concealed.
He warned Amin that future governments would scrutinise his conduct if the opposition wins power after the 2027 General Election.
Wasama Shot Dead in Bungoma
Nathan Wasama, 62, died after attackers shot him at his business premises in Tuikuk Market, Cheptais, Bungoma County, on the night of Thursday, August 6.
Family members said Wasama had expressed interest in contesting the Mount Elgon parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.
His widow, Janet Chepkemoi, has called for investigators to examine all possible motives behind the killing.
Police Continue Investigations
Bungoma County Police Commander Anderson Njagi confirmed that detectives had opened investigations into the shooting.
By Monday, police had not announced any arrests or linked the killing to political activities.
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence as they seek to establish who killed Wasama and what motivated the attack.
Political Tensions Rise Ahead of 2027
Gachagua’s remarks came as he continues to mobilise support for the Democracy for the Citizens Party ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The former Deputy President has recently intensified criticism of President William Ruto’s administration and promised supporters that DCP will mount a strong challenge in the next election.
