Four Killed After School Pit Latrine Collapses in Nyamira

Four people have died after a pit latrine under construction collapsed at Chinche Primary School in Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County. The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, July 24.

The victims were working on a toilet project funded through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF). The pit reportedly collapsed while construction was underway.

Rescue Effort Turns Tragic

Witnesses said two workers became trapped when the walls of the pit gave way. Three other people entered the pit to rescue them.

The loose soil collapsed again moments later. The second collapse trapped the rescuers beneath the debris.

Residents, police officers and emergency teams rushed to the scene. They worked together for hours to recover the victims.

Excavator Claims Emerge

Authorities deployed an excavator to assist with the rescue operation. The machine removed large amounts of soil from the collapsed pit.

Some residents claimed the excavator accidentally struck several trapped victims. They alleged the incident happened during efforts to reach those buried underground.

Officials have not confirmed those claims. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the rescue operation.

Investigation Expected

The collapse has shocked residents of Borabu Constituency. The incident has also raised concerns about safety measures at construction sites.

Police are expected to investigate the cause of the collapse. The findings may determine whether negligence contributed to the tragedy.
