A fire broke out at Ofafa Jericho High School on Saturday evening, destroying personal belongings of more than 100 students in one of the school’s dormitories.
The incident happened at around 5 p.m. when flames spread through Kifaru Dormitory. The fire caused panic among parents who rushed to the school gate seeking updates about their children.
School principal Anthony Thuo confirmed that all students remained safe after the incident. He said no learner suffered injuries during the fire.
Thuo said the school had accounted for all students living in the affected dormitory. He added that the administration had started plans to provide accommodation for those affected.
The principal explained that 122 students lost their belongings in the fire. The destroyed items included personal property kept inside the dormitory.
“The students who have been affected are the 122 who were staying in the dormitory known as Kifaru,” Thuo said.
The school has launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire. Authorities are expected to examine the scene and determine what triggered the blaze.
The incident comes amid rising concerns over fires in secondary schools across the country. Several institutions have reported similar cases in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, Kisii School closed temporarily after a fire destroyed a room belonging to the school captain.
The fire occurred during a visiting day when parents and guardians were at the institution. School officials and emergency teams responded quickly and prevented the flames from spreading to other sections.
Authorities later began investigations into the incident. Officials also engaged students, parents, and school management before allowing learners to leave for their homes.
A separate fire also affected Kakamega High School after flames destroyed a dormitory within the school compound.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and contained the fire before it caused further damage. Students escaped injuries because they were attending classes when the incident occurred.
The latest incident at Ofafa Jericho High School adds pressure on education officials to address safety concerns in learning institutions.
Schools have continued to review fire prevention measures, including emergency response plans and student safety procedures. Investigations into the Ofafa fire will determine the next steps after assessing the extent of the damage.
