The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority has announced public consultations on proposed electricity tariffs. The process will determine how much Kenyans pay for electricity over the next three years.
EPRA said the consultations will guide electricity tariffs for the 2026/27 to 2028/29 control period. The review affects charges by Kenya Power, KenGen, and other electricity sector players.
The regulator also postponed the initial consultation programme that was set to begin on May 25. New meetings will now take place in June across different regions.
New Tariff Proposal Under Review
EPRA said Kenya Power submitted the tariff application on behalf of several electricity agencies. These include KenGen, GDC, KETRACO, and REREC.
The authority said the application falls under provisions of the Energy Act. Officials will now collect public feedback before making a final decision.
EPRA stated that the consultation forums will allow citizens and stakeholders to present their views. The authority said public participation remains a legal requirement before approving new tariffs.
The process comes as many Kenyans continue raising concerns over expensive electricity bills. Businesses and households have repeatedly complained about the rising cost of living.
Public Anger Over Rising Power Bills
The review follows public criticism after EPRA increased electricity charges for May 2026 billing. The adjustment raised power costs by more than Ksh1 per unit.
Consumers questioned the levies used to justify the increase in electricity bills. Many also demanded transparency regarding public participation during the review process.
The latest consultation announcement now gives Kenyans another chance to submit views before new tariffs take effect. The regulator says public input will help shape the final decision.
Energy costs remain a major concern for many families and businesses. Rising electricity prices continue affecting production costs and household spending nationwide.
EPRA Releases New Consultation Schedule
EPRA released a revised schedule for the consultation meetings across several counties. The forums will begin in Kisumu on June 15.
The meetings will continue in Eldoret on June 16 and Nakuru on June 17. Nyeri will host consultations on June 18 before Nairobi meetings on June 19.
Garissa residents will attend consultations on June 22 while Mombasa meetings will conclude the exercise on June 24. EPRA urged stakeholders to participate actively in the process.
The outcome of the consultations will shape electricity pricing over the next three years. Many Kenyans now await the regulator’s final decision on the proposed tariffs.
