Several people are feared dead following a serious road accident near Syokimau along Mombasa Road on Thursday night, August 20.
Preliminary reports indicate that at least eight people may have lost their lives after a PSV matatu collided head-on with a saloon car between Quiver Mombasa Road and Katani.
Matatu and Car Crash Near Syokimau
The 18-seater matatu was heading towards Nairobi when it collided with the black saloon car, which was travelling towards Katani.
The impact caused both vehicles to leave the road and land in a ditch.
Images from the scene show extensive damage to both vehicles, with the matatu sustaining severe damage to its front section.
The windscreen and driver’s cabin suffered major damage, while parts of the rear and driver’s side also appeared badly damaged.
The saloon car landed head-first in the ditch, with its rear section left hanging above the ground.
Emergency Teams Respond
Emergency response teams rushed to the scene to assist people involved in the crash.
The number of survivors and the severity of their injuries remained unclear at the time of reporting.
Police are expected to investigate the crash and establish what caused the two vehicles to collide.
Road Accidents Raise Concern
The crash adds to a series of serious road accidents reported across Kenya this week.
On Monday, August 17, a Range Rover collided with a motorcycle along Riverside Drive in Westlands, Nairobi, killing the boda boda rider and the vehicle’s driver.
The Kenya Red Cross reported that road crashes killed 31 people and left 75 others with serious injuries during the first two weeks of August.
Authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution as investigations into the latest Mombasa Road crash continue.
