Detectives investigating the murder of Lalagin Secondary School teacher Martina Chepkemoi Rutto have established that she had been experiencing marital problems before her death.
Rutto, 40, disappeared on August 26 after leaving her home, triggering a search by relatives and colleagues.
Her husband, a teacher based in Nairobi, reported her disappearance at Sotik Police Station after he failed to reach her by phone.
Body Recovered From Kimugu River
A resident later spotted Rutto’s body floating in the Kimugu River on the outskirts of Kericho town and alerted police.
Officers retrieved her from the river and took her to Kericho County Referral Hospital. She was still alive when she arrived but later died from her injuries.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Rutto suffered five stab wounds to the chest before she was dumped in the river.
Husband Denies Involvement
Investigators say Rutto and her husband had experienced disagreements over undisclosed family matters before her disappearance.
The husband reportedly acknowledged the marital problems but denied involvement in the attack. Police have not linked him to the killing, and investigators have not announced any charges against him.
Kericho East Sub-County DCI boss Kennedy Apindi said detectives were awaiting postmortem results to establish more details surrounding her death.
Investigators are also examining Rutto’s final movements and other circumstances that could identify whoever attacked her.
Rutto previously taught at Litein Boys’ High School before joining Lalagin Secondary School. She was reportedly seeking a transfer to Narok County to live with her family.
KUPPET officials have called for a thorough investigation into her killing.
