The government, through the Ministry of Information, Communications, and Digital Economy, requested TikTok assurances on election-period misinformation.
Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo met with TikTok leadership to discuss safety measures.
He sought clarity on tools to detect misinformation and prevent coordinated disinformation campaigns during the 2027 elections.
Kabogo welcomed innovation and growth in Kenya’s digital economy but stressed social media accountability for election information.
“I sought clear assurances on TikTok’s tools to detect misinformation and prevent coordinated disinformation campaigns,” he said.
The meeting preceded the TikTok Safer Internet Summit 2026, set for March 10 and 11.
The summit will promote safer online experiences and improve digital content moderation strategies.
The discussions came after the National Assembly rejected a bill proposing a total TikTok ban in Kenya.
Lawmakers cited potential job losses among youth who rely on TikTok as a primary income source.
Kenya currently has over 17 million TikTok users, showing the platform’s significant influence in the creative economy.
Kabogo said TikTok must comply with Kenya’s regulatory framework, including the Data Protection Act.
The government is working with TikTok to strengthen content moderation and enforce stricter age-verification measures.
These measures aim to protect children and other vulnerable groups from harmful online content.
Kabogo stressed that collaboration with global tech firms will build a trustworthy digital ecosystem in Kenya.
He challenged TikTok to expand its operational presence locally and moderate content in African languages.
The National Assembly, through the Public Petitions Committee, advised regulations instead of a full TikTok ban.
Lawmakers argued a total ban would hinder economic growth and limit youth employment opportunities.
The government aims to ensure election integrity while allowing digital innovation to thrive responsibly.
Engaging with TikTok highlights Kenya’s commitment to online safety and protecting citizens from misinformation.
This strategy preserves the economic and social benefits of digital platforms while securing the 2027 elections.
