A compensation panel has approved 100 claims submitted by uniformed officers affected by human rights violations. The approvals followed a verification and authentication process conducted under the ongoing reparations programme.
The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations confirmed that the claims had undergone assessment before approval. The process has been designed to ensure that only verified cases receive compensation.
The latest approvals form part of a wider programme covering different categories of victims. Civilian victims affected by deaths, injuries, sexual violence and economic losses have also been included.
More Than 1,000 Claims Processed
A total of 1,083 claims have so far been processed under the compensation programme. Payments have continued on a rolling basis as individual cases complete the required assessment stages.
The programme covers victims affected by demonstrations, public protests and related incidents. However, the panel has not indicated that all approved cases involving uniformed officers relate to specific protests.
The Panel has also confirmed that 139 claims involving verified economic losses have been settled. The payments mainly cover small and informal business owners whose livelihoods were disrupted.
Latest Compensation Phases
The approved payments fall under Phases IV and V of the reparations process. These phases include claims that have completed verification, categorisation and final approval procedures.
Phase IV covered civilian claims involving fatalities, injuries and economic losses. Approved compensation under that phase amounted to Ksh74.35 million.
Claims involving uniformed officers were also included in the same phase. The approved compensation for that category amounted to Ksh6.2 million.
Phase V has included additional claims from both civilians and uniformed officers. Combined compensation from the two phases has reached Ksh113.8 million.
Programme Continues
The compensation initiative has continued as part of efforts to address harm suffered by victims. The Panel has stated that payments will continue as more claims complete the required processes.
Midterm records from the programme showed that Ksh1.014 billion had been disbursed to victims and beneficiaries. The funds have been distributed to approved claimants under the established framework.
The Panel has committed to continued engagement with victims throughout the compensation process. Direct communication with beneficiaries has been maintained during the assessment and payment stages.
Focus on Accountability
The reparations programme has been established to provide recognition and support to individuals affected by human rights violations. The process has also been linked to broader efforts supporting accountability and reconciliation.
Further claims are expected to proceed through upcoming phases of the programme. Each case will continue undergoing review before compensation decisions are made.
The Panel has maintained that the process will continue until eligible claims have been assessed. Victims and beneficiaries will continue receiving updates as the programme advances.
