Former Minister Gideon Konchellah Dies After Illness

Former Cabinet Minister and ex-Kilgoris MP Gideon Konchellah has died after a long illness.

Sources indicated that Konchellah died on Saturday, June 13, while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital. Reports suggest he suffered a cardiac arrest before his death.

His family had not released official details about funeral arrangements by the time of publication.

Konchellah served the people of Kilgoris for several terms in Parliament between 2003 and 2022. During his political career, he represented different parties, including Party of National Unity, United Republican Party, and Jubilee Party.

He remained a prominent political figure in Narok County for nearly two decades.

Service in Kibaki Government

Beyond Parliament, Konchellah served as Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons under former President Mwai Kibaki between 2006 and 2007.

During his time in government, he oversaw the implementation of the Refugee Act of 2006. The law introduced a new legal framework for refugee registration and protection in Kenya.

Ahead of the 2022 General Election, Konchellah left the Kilgoris parliamentary race and sought the Narok Senate seat.

However, he did not win the senatorial contest.

Current Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli led tributes to the former lawmaker.

Sunkuli described Konchellah as both his predecessor and successor in Parliament and praised his contribution to public service and leadership in Kilgoris and Narok County.
