Mwiki Matatu Operators Protest Over Insecurity, Disrupt CBD Transport

Matatu operators along the Mwiki route disrupted transport to Nairobi’s Central Business District on Wednesday, May 6 as they protested rising insecurity and alleged interference by rival groups.

Drivers and conductors took to the streets and blocked sections of the Kasarani–Mwiki–Njiru and Kayole routes, leaving commuters stranded during peak hours. The operators said ongoing disruptions over the past few weeks have cut their earnings and affected normal operations.

They accused unknown groups of attacking crews, intimidating drivers, and taking control of key stages along the route. One driver said the situation has worsened despite existing economic pressure from rising fuel prices.

“Since the petrol price hike, we have struggled with reduced income, but we still try to support our families. Now we are also dealing with people who attack us, and we don’t know where to report,” he said.

The operators said they have used their current stage for over 10 years, but a new group recently moved in and pushed them out. They claimed the new vehicles dominate the route by making several trips before others complete even one, which reduces passenger flow and daily income.

They also said they reported the matter to their SACCO officials, but the issue remains unresolved.

The protest slowed traffic in parts of the city as operators demanded immediate action from authorities to restore order, protect crews, and ensure fair operations along the route.
