Former Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto has accused Senator Hillary Sigei of interfering in the county’s 2027 political race. He claimed the senator was sponsoring candidates instead of allowing voters to decide.
Rutto spoke during an interview with a local radio station on Friday, June 26. He said the alleged interference had increased political tension across the county.
Rutto claimed the dispute became clear during the recently concluded UDA grassroots elections. He accused Sigei of using his influence within the ruling party to shape local political outcomes.
He argued that party elections should remain free and competitive. He said no leader should dictate who contests for elective positions.
“How can one person determine where votes will go and who should contest for various seats?” Rutto asked. He claimed Sigei attempted to control the UDA grassroots elections in Bomet.
Claims of Sponsoring Rivals
The former governor also accused the senator of encouraging leaders to challenge him in the 2027 gubernatorial race. He said such decisions should remain personal and free from outside influence.
“I saw him busy sponsoring people to run for the gubernatorial race,” Rutto said. He added that he questioned the senator’s role in the county’s political affairs.
Rutto claimed he warned Sigei against backing candidates. He said the senator should instead support Governor Hillary Barchok if he wanted to influence the Senate race.
“Leadership should be decided by the people, not through political sponsorship,” Rutto said. He insisted voters should determine the county’s future leaders without external pressure.
Criticism Over Oversight Role
Rutto also questioned Sigei’s approach to oversight. He accused the senator of using threats instead of established constitutional processes.
He said the Senate should perform oversight through its committees. He added that county leaders deserve fair treatment during accountability proceedings.
“The oversight committee should discharge its constitutional mandate professionally,” Rutto said. He also urged leaders to allow Governor Barchok to focus on serving residents.
County Faces Audit Questions
The remarks come as Bomet County faces scrutiny from the Senate County Public Investment Committee. Senators are examining issues raised in the Auditor-General’s 2024/2025 report.
The committee has questioned several county institutions over financial management and service delivery. Audit findings pointed to weaknesses in internal controls and accountability systems.
The oversight process continues as senators seek explanations from county officials. The outcome could influence future reforms within the county government.
