A nurse shot and killed her two young sons and her grandmother before taking her own life. Authorities discovered the four bodies during a welfare check at a Tennessee home on January 2.
Investigators confirmed that all victims suffered fatal gunshot wounds. The victims were identified as Arius Thompson, 4, Isaiah Johnson, 13, and their great-grandmother, Evelyn Johnson, 88.
The boys’ mother, Heather Thompson, 32, was also found dead inside the home. Authorities said preliminary evidence suggests Heather Thompson was responsible for the killings before committing suicide herself.
Investigators stressed there is no indication that anyone else was involved in the tragedy. The motive behind the killings has not yet been publicly released.
Victim Background and Professional Life

Public records show Heather Thompson worked as a nurse at Ascension Saint Thomas Three Rivers Hospital in Waverly. She earned a master’s degree from Walden University prior to her employment at the hospital.
Authorities revealed that the family had lived in Waverly their entire lives. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis stated he personally knew the family and was emotionally affected by the deaths.
Referencing a prior explosion in the county that killed sixteen people, Davis highlighted the impact on the close-knit community. “Here again, small town America. Here again, I know the families,” he said.
He added, “We’re going to do right by them. We’re going to respect them. We’re going to do right by them.” The sheriff emphasised the community’s need for support and healing after repeated tragedies.
Father’s Grief and Efforts to Bring Children Home
Jeremiah Thompson, the children’s father, was estranged from Heather Thompson at the time of the killings. He expressed his grief publicly in an online post, writing: “I miss my sons already. Daddy still loves you. Sorry, I was at work.”
Following the tragedy, Thompson launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses and transport his sons to New Mexico. The fundraiser has raised nearly $11,000 toward its $16,000 goal, showing strong community support.
Describing his heartbreak, Thompson said, “As a father, it hurt and shattered my soul to hear my sons Arius(Ari), and Isaiah have been taken from me.” He added, “They were just babies. Every second of today, I wish I could just wake up.”
In an update shared recently, the father revealed he and his sister were traveling to Tennessee to bring his sons home. Hundreds of messages poured in from supporters offering condolences, encouragement, and prayers.
One supporter wrote, “Brother, I am so sorry. Stay strong and know you are not alone. I’ll keep your boys, you, and your family in prayer.” Another added, “Biah, I’m so deeply sorry for your loss. My heart aches for you and your family. Sending love and prayers.”
Similar Cases Highlight Growing Concern
This is not the first horror suicide killing spree in the United States. In 2025, a five-year-old girl ran for help after witnessing her father shoot three family members before killing himself.
The victims in that case were identified as the child’s mother, Marissa Leara Rowell, 32, grandmother Sandra Gayle Fogarty, 71, and aunt Alisha Lael Fogarty, 33. They were all at their Florida home when Rowell launched the deadly attack around 8pm on July 24.
Melissa’s cousin later stated that Rowell had been planning to leave her violent husband. She was reportedly in the process of buying a house at the time of the tragedy.
Experts have highlighted that domestic and family-related homicide-suicide incidents remain a serious concern across the United States. Officials stress the importance of mental health support and early intervention for at-risk individuals.
Authorities continue to investigate Heather Thompson’s case and have urged the public to respect the family’s privacy. Sheriff Davis reiterated that the community must come together to support one another after this devastating loss.

Officials are reviewing police records, public reports, and personal histories to identify any warning signs. Investigators continue to confirm details and examine potential factors contributing to this tragic incident.
Community members expressed shock and sorrow at the news of the quadruple deaths. Local leaders called for increased awareness of family violence and available support services.
Neighbors described the family as quiet and well-known within Waverly. They said the deaths have left the town in mourning and searching for answers.
Mental health experts warn that tragedies like this illustrate the urgent need for improved access to counseling and crisis intervention. They emphasised that communities must work to identify warning signs before violence occurs.
The Tennessee case adds to a growing list of family-related homicides in the United States in recent years. Authorities urge families, schools, and health providers to remain vigilant and report unusual behavior.
Sheriff Chris Davis concluded that while investigations continue, the focus remains on respecting the victims and providing community support. He encouraged residents to look out for one another and seek help when needed.
