Former Harambee Stars Coach Engin Firat Dies After Heart Attack

Former Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has died after suffering a heart attack. Firat passed away on Monday, March 9, according to confirmation from his club Nejmeh SC. He served as the club’s first-team coach at the time of his death.

The coach suffered the fatal heart attack while at Istanbul Airport. Reports indicate that he had left Beirut earlier and was travelling to Adana when the incident occurred.

His club confirmed the news in an official statement that expressed deep sorrow over the sudden loss.

“With great sadness and sorrow, Star Athletic Club mourns first team coach captain Engin Firat, who passed away following a sudden heart attack while at Istanbul airport on his way to Adana a few hours after leaving Beirut for his country,” the club said in the statement.

Nejmeh described Firat as a dedicated professional who left a strong impression within the club and among its players. The club also praised his commitment, discipline, and high professional standards during his short tenure.

Short but Promising Spell at Nejmeh

Firat had joined Nejmeh SC on February 8, 2026 as head coach. His appointment reunited him with several Kenyan players he had previously coached.

The Kenyan trio included Anthony Akumu, Masud Juma, and Austin Odhiambo. All three players had worked with Firat during his time with the Kenyan national team.

During his short period at the Lebanese club, Firat recorded positive results. The team remained unbeaten in his opening matches. He also guided the side to a domestic cup final shortly after taking charge.

Firat served as the head coach of Harambee Stars from 2021 to 2024. His tenure lasted three years and included several international competitions and qualifiers.

During his time with Kenya, Firat managed 24 matches. The team recorded seven wins, eight draws, and nine losses under his leadership.

One of the most difficult moments during his tenure came during a heavy 5–0 defeat to Mali national football team. His tenure ended in December 2024 after Kenya failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Controversial Exit from Kenya

Firat’s departure from the Kenyan national team also involved a legal dispute. The coach had raised concerns over salary delays during his time in charge.

He claimed that the federation owed him more than 11 months in unpaid wages. The dispute drew attention within Kenyan football circles and raised questions about the management of national team contracts.

Despite the controversy, Firat remained an experienced coach who worked across several countries during his career. His sudden death has shocked the football community in both Kenya and Lebanon.
