Nairobi has been hit by devastating floods following heavy overnight rainfall, leaving 23 people dead and causing widespread disruption across the city. The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the fatalities as part of an ongoing emergency response.
Widespread Damage and Displacement
The floods have destroyed property, forced road closures, and displaced residents in several areas of Nairobi. The most affected neighborhoods include Mukuru, Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, South B and C, Pipeline/Embakasi, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Githurai, and parts of Westlands. Homes were submerged, and residents were forced to seek higher ground to escape rising waters.
Major Roads Impassable
Key highways have also been affected, with some sections rendered impassable by flooding. Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road, Thika Superhighway, Jogoo Road, Enterprise Road, and Lang’ata Road experienced severe waterlogging. Traffic has been disrupted, and authorities warned motorists to avoid flooded areas and remain vigilant while navigating the city.
Emergency Response and Rescue
The NPS launched immediate search and rescue operations, working with other stakeholders to reach people trapped by the floods. “We are pleased to report that 29 people were successfully rescued from various locations and are receiving the necessary support,” said Muchiri Nyaga, Director of Corporate Communication and spokesperson for the National Police Service. Response teams remain fully deployed, attending to distress calls and continuing rescue missions.
Public Safety Measures
Residents have been urged to exercise extreme caution as rains continue and to report emergencies via toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112. Authorities emphasised the importance of staying alert and following official advisories. Motorists and pedestrians must observe the Highway Code and take extra precautions in affected areas.
Risks and Preparedness
The floods exposed the risks posed by Nairobi’s inadequate drainage systems during heavy rainfall. Authorities continue to coordinate relief efforts, focusing on rescuing trapped residents and preventing further casualties. Muchiri emphasised that the NPS, alongside partner agencies, remains fully committed to protecting public safety and security.
Community Vigilance
Communities are advised to remain vigilant and cooperative during ongoing emergency operations. The disaster underscores the importance of preparedness, especially as heavy rains are expected to continue. Citizens are encouraged to prioritise safety, avoid flood-prone areas, and follow guidance from authorities at all times.
The scale of the flooding has highlighted the need for sustained emergency response and community awareness. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while ensuring immediate relief and protection for affected residents.
