Senate Considers Historic Elevation of Thika Town to City Status

Thika Municipality is at the center of a renewed push for city status after the Senate began formally considering its application. The Senate Standing Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations announced it is reviewing the request in line with the law.

The public has been invited to submit views on the matter to ensure transparency and inclusivity in the decision-making process.

Public Participation Invited

In a notice published in a national daily, the Senate Committee urged members of the public to submit representations regarding Thika’s city status application.

“In accordance with the provisions of Article 118 of the Constitution, the Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations now invites interested members of the public to submit any representations that they may have on the matter by way of memoranda,” the notice read.

Residents, business leaders, civil society groups, and other interested parties can submit written memoranda to the Clerk of the Senate. All submissions are expected before Monday, March 9, 2026. This process ensures that stakeholders have a say in the future of Thika’s urban development.

Public Hearing Scheduled

In addition to written submissions, the committee will hold a public hearing on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Thika Municipal Chambers. The hearing provides a platform for oral presentations from residents, business owners, and civic groups.

Attendees will have the opportunity to express their support, concerns, and recommendations regarding the elevation of Thika Municipality to city status.

The public hearing will play a crucial role in guiding the committee’s recommendations to the full Senate. Lawmakers expect active participation, which will influence the decision-making process and ensure the city’s residents have a direct voice in shaping their municipality’s future.

Importance of City Status

If approved, Thika would become Kenya’s seventh recognized city after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret. Residents are eager for the elevation, citing Thika’s expanding population, growing industrial base, and strategic location along major transport corridors.

City status could unlock further development opportunities, attract investors, and create jobs for the local community.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi has been a strong advocate for Thika’s city status. In early 2025, he submitted a report and charter from an ad hoc committee to the County Assembly, highlighting the municipality’s readiness for elevation.

The report emphasized Thika’s potential as an economic and industrial hub in Kenya.

Legislative Process

The County Assembly unanimously approved the report, forwarding it to the Senate for national consideration. The current review by the Senate Committee marks a critical stage in Thika’s journey toward city recognition.

Lawmakers and residents hope that the process will be smooth, given that Thika has already met key statutory requirements for city status.

Notably, Thika has a population exceeding 250,000, satisfying the Urban Areas and Cities Act threshold.

The municipality also boasts infrastructure and services aligned with city standards, including commercial centers, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.

Economic and Development Potential

City status would further strengthen Thika’s economic prospects. The municipality hosts a variety of industries, including manufacturing, textiles, and agro-processing. Elevation to city status could increase government funding, enhance urban planning, and attract both local and foreign investors.

Local businesses are optimistic about the benefits. Entrepreneurs expect improved infrastructure, better transport networks, and increased opportunities for trade.

Residents also anticipate enhancements in public services, such as waste management, public transportation, and utilities.

Community Support

Residents have consistently voiced support for city status. Many believe recognition as a city would reflect Thika’s growth and significance in the region.

Civic organizations and local leaders have organized campaigns and forums to educate the public about the benefits of city status and to gather community input.

The push for city status has gained momentum in recent years, reflecting both population growth and urban development. Lawmakers, civic groups, and business leaders have collaborated to ensure Thika meets all legal and administrative requirements for recognition as a city.

Steps Ahead

The next steps involve the compilation of public submissions and feedback from the March 6 hearing. The committee will analyze all inputs before making recommendations to the full Senate.

Following Senate approval, the President will officially confer city status, allowing Thika to formally join Kenya’s urban city network.

City planners and administrators are preparing for the potential transition. Upgrading municipal services, implementing urban development plans, and ensuring efficient governance structures will be crucial once Thika becomes a city.

Thika Municipality’s bid for city status marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s urban development agenda. With public input, legislative review, and Governor Wamatangi’s strong advocacy, the municipality is poised to achieve recognition. Elevation to city status promises economic growth, job creation, and improved public services. The upcoming public hearing on March 6, 2026, and submission deadline on March 9, 2026, provide residents and stakeholders the opportunity to shape the future of Thika as it moves closer to joining Kenya’s elite list of cities.
