Elgeiyo Marakwet Man Allegedly Exhumes His Child’s Body Who Died in 2022

Police in Keiyo South Sub-County, Elgeyo Marakwet County, have launched a manhunt for a man accused of illegally exhuming the body of his child in a disturbing incident that has shocked local residents.

The incident occurred on January 17, 2026, at around 11:00 a.m. in the Chepsigot area, according to police reports.

The suspect, identified as Oliver Kiprop, allegedly dug up the grave of his male child who died and was buried in 2022. Authorities say the exhumation was carried out without any legal approval or involvement of public health or law enforcement officers.

Residents in the area raised the alarm after noticing unusual activity at the gravesite.

Police officers were alerted and responded to the scene, only to discover that the grave had already been interfered with and the body removed.

By the time officers arrived, the suspect had fled and gone into hiding.

Following the incident, police secured the area and recovered the body. It was later transported to Iten Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending further investigations and arrangements for a lawful reburial.

Officers described the act as a serious violation of the law and a public health concern.

Investigators have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large.

Police believe he may still be within the wider Elgeyo Marakwet region or could have sought refuge in neighboring counties.

Authorities have appealed to members of the public to provide any information that may lead to his arrest.

Local leaders have condemned the incident, urging residents to respect burial sites and follow the law when dealing with sensitive matters involving the deceased.

Police have assured the public that anyone found culpable will be held fully accountable once investigations are completed.
