Gilgil Member of Parliament Martha Wangari has ruled out using the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket when seeking another term in the 2027 General Election. The legislator has, however, kept her next political party undecided, saying she is taking time before settling on a new political vehicle.
Wangari Keeps Next Party Under Wraps
Wangari said her political party is currently not her immediate priority as she considers how to defend her Gilgil parliamentary seat. She has indicated that a decision on the party to use in 2027 will be made later as she weighs her available options.
The move marks a change from the 2022 election, when Wangari secured the Gilgil seat through the UDA ticket. She had previously won the constituency in 2017 on a Jubilee Party ticket after serving as a nominated senator between 2013 and 2017.
MP Explains Her Independent Positions
Wangari has also addressed criticism over her positions on political matters, particularly accusations that she has remained neutral on issues involving the government. She said she would not support actions she considers wrong simply because they involve politicians on her side of the political divide.
The MP cited her opposition to the 2024 impeachment motion against then-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as an example. She said her decision was based on whether the constitutional threshold for impeachment had been met rather than on political allegiance.
Gilgil Seat Enters New Political Phase
Wangari’s decision comes as politicians across Kenya continue to reassess their party affiliations ahead of the 2027 elections. Her next choice of political vehicle could therefore determine the platform through which she seeks another term in Gilgil.
For now, Wangari remains the sitting Gilgil MP and continues to serve in Parliament under the UDA affiliation. The official parliamentary profile currently lists her as the Member of Parliament for Gilgil and a UDA member.
She has not disclosed a replacement party, leaving her next political move open. Her decision is expected to attract attention in Gilgil as preparations for the 2027 election continue.
