Mukurweini Member of Parliament John Kaguchia has been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after spending the night at Royal Media Services offices in Nairobi.
Detectives arrested the lawmaker on Monday morning, August 3, shortly after he claimed that unknown individuals had been pursuing him following a television interview.
MP Spent Night Inside Media House
Kaguchia had appeared on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi show before raising alarm on social media about what he described as suspicious police activity around the media house.
He claimed several unmarked Subaru vehicles surrounded the Royal Media Services premises after the interview ended.
“After my Kiririmbi Show this evening, a contingent of police have surrounded Royal Media Studios and erected roadblocks with intentions of arresting me. I will not be intimidated whatsoever,” Kaguchia wrote.
The MP chose to remain inside the media house throughout Sunday night as officers reportedly stayed outside the premises.
Reports of Roadblocks Along Dennis Pritt Road
Witnesses reported seeing security officers stop and search vehicles along Dennis Pritt Road near the media house.
Authorities had not confirmed the reported roadblocks by the time of publication.
DCI Probing Remarks Made in Kieni
On Monday morning, Kaguchia confirmed that investigators wanted to question him over remarks he made during a political rally in Kieni, Nyeri County.
He accused several state operatives, including government digital strategist Dennis Itumbi, of spreading what he called a false narrative that contributed to his arrest.
Controversial Remarks Draw Attention
Kaguchia, a close ally of Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, attracted criticism after a rally held on Saturday, August 1.
Critics interpreted his remarks to mean that Mt Kenya residents could face consequences if they voted for President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
The MP has not publicly addressed the specific allegations surrounding the remarks.
Further Questioning Expected
Detectives are expected to take Kaguchia to the DCI regional offices on Valley Road for further questioning.
His arrest comes as authorities intensify investigations into politicians accused of making inflammatory or divisive statements ahead of the 2027 elections.
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has already opened investigations involving several prominent political figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku.
