Learners in Competency Based Education institutions could soon wear standardised school uniforms nationwide. The Ministry of Education is considering a proposal introducing a common dress code across basic education levels.
The proposal emerged during the National Conference on Education held between May 7 and May 9. Stakeholders supported the plan as part of efforts to improve equity and affordability in schools.
Under the proposal, schools would adopt a common uniform design for learners across the country. Institutions would still maintain unique identities through customised school badges.
Proposal Targets Equity and Affordability
Education stakeholders said standardised uniforms would reduce financial pressure on parents and guardians. Many families currently struggle with the rising cost of school uniforms.
The conference resolved that all schools under the Competency Based Education system should adopt the policy. The proposal affects Comprehensive Schools and Senior Schools across Kenya.
Officials believe the changes could create greater equality among learners from different economic backgrounds. Supporters also argue that common uniforms would discourage unnecessary competition between schools.
Schools to Retain Identity Through Badges
Despite the standardised design, schools would still preserve their individual identities. Institutions would achieve this through specific badges attached to the uniforms.
Stakeholders said the badges would allow schools to maintain branding without increasing uniform costs. The approach aims to balance national uniformity with school identity.
The conference also recommended regulation of uniform prices nationwide. Officials want authorities to cap costs to protect parents from exploitation by suppliers.
Education Sector Awaits Government Decision
The proposal now awaits further policy discussions and possible implementation by the Ministry of Education. Authorities have not announced when the changes could officially begin.
The recommendations come as the government continues implementing reforms under the Competency Based Education system. Education officials say affordability remains a major concern for many Kenyan families as parents also seek clarification.
