Police Hunt Politician Linked to Ol Kalou Political Chaos

Police in Nyandarua have launched a manhunt for a former Member of County Assembly (MCA) and a County Assembly official following overnight political chaos in Ol Kalou ahead of the July 16 parliamentary by-election.

Authorities say the suspects allegedly took part in violence that included destruction of property, intimidation and threats against political opponents and businesses linked to rival political camps.

Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdirisak Jaldesa said security agencies will not allow violence or intimidation during the campaign period.

“We have seen in the last few days incidents involving the destruction of government property and threats. We will not allow people, either verbally or physically, to threaten others. Everyone has the right to campaign without being disturbed,” Jaldesa said.

He accused some political groups of using hired gangs to intimidate opponents and disrupt meetings.

“There has been intolerance where parties bring groups to intimidate opponents. We will not allow it,” he added.

Jaldesa also condemned attacks targeting hotels and businesses hosting political meetings, saying police will protect private property and deal firmly with anyone spreading propaganda, misinformation or inflammatory messages.

Hotel Chaos Sparks Political Row

The operation follows Wednesday night’s unrest in Ol Kalou, where tension escalated after reports of chaos and gunshots near a hotel hosting a meeting linked to the Democracy for the Citizens (DCP) party.

The incident occurred as parties intensified campaigns ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election scheduled for July 16.

DCP claimed some of its campaign strategists became trapped inside the hotel after violence broke out outside.

The incident later triggered a political exchange between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

Gachagua accused security officers and alleged state-sponsored groups of disrupting DCP activities and targeting his supporters.

Murkomen dismissed the allegations and instead warned politicians against incitement during the by-election campaigns.

Police have continued searching for the two suspects as investigations into the violence gather pace. Authorities say they will take action against anyone found responsible for disrupting political activities or threatening public peace in Nyandarua County.
